Hoary Marmot in the Rockies
Hoary Marmot in the Rockies
Hoary Marmots are large ground squirrels, with short, heavy limbs, and broad heads. Marmots are the largest North American ground squirrel also often nicknamed "Whistler" for their high-pitched warning sound to signifying potential danger. The record sized autumn male Marmot specimen attained a mass of nearly 13.5 kg (30 lb), possibly the largest size known for any marmot. Hoary Marmots predominantly inhabit Rocky Mountainous Alpine Environments up to 2,500 metres (8,200 ft) elevation, although coastal populations also thrive at or near sea level.
