Bighorn Rams Sensing Chemistry Changes in Ewes During the Rut
Heightening the instincts.. When Bighorn Ram's Flehmen response detects that Ewes are in estrous, the elevation of the Rut takes place. As the Ram curls his upper lip, he breathes in the ewe's scent, facilitating the transfer of pheromones and other scents into the vomeronasal organ located above the roof of the mouth. Bighorn Sheep Rams will then rise to assert themselves further until a Genetically Gifted Ram eventually stands out.
