Hiking in Jasper as a Workout
Benefits of Hiking Outside JasperWhat Makes a Hike in Jasper great for a workout is that it gets you outdoors, away from the clutter, clatter, and stress of urban living. While the Jasper "urban" environment isn't exactly what I would call stressful, those who venture outdoors in pristine areas where Nature still has a foothold, seem to develop more immunity to the challenges we all face every day.

A workout hike where there are beautiful forests and mountains, lakes and valleys, wildlife and biodiversity will often reward you with more than you expected - often unexpectedly!

Beautiful national parks like Jasper, where one can hike and enjoy simple pleasures will eventually bite at you in a different way if you let it. It won't take long before your hiking workout in Jasper not only rewards you with better fitness, but also a sense of well-being and serenity that can not be found in a gym. While I am certainly not knocking the gym; I have appreciated those benefits for over 20 years; we're just going to discuss how adding outdoor hiking variety can add to your quality of life as well as provide you with a great real-world gage to add more value to those indoor workouts.

We hope this new hike Jasper section will provide you with some more knowledge, fun, and excuses to enjoy the outdoors. You can expect lots of information to arrive here over time along with the addition of more great Jasper hikes.

Benefits of Outdoor Workouts
Hike Goals are Easier to Reach in JasperRocket science isn't required to prove the benefits of hiking exercise in Jasper outdoors, so we'll just touch on a few things for now to get this started.

Probably the most noticeable benefit of a hiking workout in Jasper would be the ability to offer you a clear goal to achieve, with an obvious start and finish. A hike offers personal fitness markers - not necessarily by how fast, far or high you may go, but by how much you are able to enjoy a hiking trail, rather than consider it a task. Many Jasper hikes may seem daunting at first, but over time you will notice more enjoyment rather than that intimidation factor that we all feel.

This gradual progression is the fitness reward that Jasper hikers all realize. Hikes in Jasper that are the most fun involve pausing to view wildlife, learning about plantlife, listening to unique sounds, etc. You will always want to hike (workout) if you are having fun!

Hiking has very few barriers and nearly anyone can participate, regardless of age, wealth, or level of fitness.

Obviously, some Jasper hikes and trails are more demanding than others, requiring different levels of experience, fitness and equipment. This, however is what adds to the appeal, giving every hiker the chance to take on fresh challenges and aspire to see more of Jasper's magical places.

Let Jasper's sounds and smells, textures and colors and amazing mountains enrich and revitalize your "hiker's" soul.

Indoor Treadmill vs Hiking Jasper's Outdoors
Bored Indoor Workouts - Hike JasperYes, there are many differences between using a treadmill and hiking Jasper's outdoors.

The science of treadmill workouts do not include fresh mountain air.

An additive to a hike and its' small amount of wind is the increased energy you will feel. A light breeze in the face can provide a little boost in energy levels. With air breezing past you to cool you down you will feel better, be able to last longer, and overheat a lot less quickly.

Changes in Jasper's hiking terrain also will involve many more of your body's muscles. You not only need to keep moving forward, but side-to-side and up and down motions will add to your outdoor workout, almost unnoticeably! The most notable benefit to an outdoor hike, however, is the changing environment. Scenery can help keep boredom at bay as well as provide a distraction to hitting personal barriers.

What about a short Jasper Hike? There is a misconception about how much time it takes to exercise. A hike in Jasper for just 20 minutes, three times during the week will do wonders, mentally and physically.

Hiking outdoors provides fresh Jasper air and great scenery, but taking the treadmill route guarantees a steady temperature and a controlled atmosphere.

Basic Health During Wilderness Hiking
Running Workouts - Hike JasperWhile your basic health during wilderness hiking is a necessity most of us never threaten, some times a reminder isn't a bad idea.

From the very basics to some interesting hiking survival issues, here are a few random points that I think should be here:

While the majority of people that hike in Jasper only plan to spend a couple hours out on the trails, there are also many that take in multi-day hiking adventures. In either case, know that a hike in Jasper's wilderness always includes unkowns and a potential to displace your hiking plans. That being said, the most important things to remember are that:
  • (1) you always need to have a way to attract attention to yourself,

  • and (2) your most important hiking "equipment" should be considered "skills" and "experience" or preparedness.
While hiking in Jasper, you could simply trip on a root or rock after hiking for 1 hour and cause enough trauma to become imobile. While healthy, you may have started your hike a little later in the day thinking you could just beat dusk back to the trailhead.
What now?

...Being prepared for the smallest issues while hiking in Jasper may mean all experiences will just be another feather in your cap instead of a possible headache. We all know luck plays a part, but hiking preparedness is certainly trump.

No matter what, you always have to maintain a healthy physical condition. If you become sick, wounded, or suffer low morale, it may simply be the recognition of those things that offers a bounce back to hiking bliss.

*In many cases, lots of hikes in Jasper may be performed as a physical challenge, which means the room for mishaps is much smaller.

Hiking Survival Stresses

Any hiking adventure that evolves into a survival situation will put you under physical and mental pressure. Some stresses you will have to overcome might be:

  • Fear and anxiety

  • Pain illness and injury

  • Cold and/or Heat

  • Hunger, thirst and fatigue

  • Sleep deprivation

  • Boredom

  • Loneliness and isolation

The Importance of Water while Hiking in Jasper
Drink Water while Hiking in Jasper An adult can survive for three weeks without food, but only 3 days without water. Never start a hike if you believe you might be dehydrated. A routine workout hike or wilderness jog is obviously going to contribute somewhat to dehydration. Take the fluids you think you may lose during your Jasper outdoor adventure.

The human body loses about 2-3 litres of water each day. Loss of liquids during increased respiration and perspiration will increase considerably on a hot day's hike.

Retaining Fluids While Hiking

Any longer hike in Jasper could turn to thoughts of conserving body fluids. If you are forced to keep fluid loss to a minimum, take these precautions:

  • Avoid exertion. Just rest. Do not smoke.

  • Stay in the shade.

  • If the ground is hot, do not lie down.

  • Eat as little as possible. Digestion uses fluids. Fats are especially hard to digest.

  • Alcohol takes fluid away from vital organs, so don't drink it.

  • Try to talk as little as possible.

  • Breathe through your nose, not mouth.

On a hike and you need water? Watch the wildlife!

It may be interesting to some that there are indeed clear signs to finding water while out on any hike in Jasper. I would imagine none of us would ever need to utilize this information, however, it is fun to know.
Almost all animals require water regularly.
  • Grazing mammals drink at dusk and dawn, never going far from water.

  • Meat eaters get moisture from their prey, so they are not good indicators.

  • When birds are flying straight and low, they are usually heading for water.

  • A bird returning from water will likely fly from tree to tree, resting frequently.

  • Birds of prey and water birds do not drink frequently.

  • Ants marching up a tree are usually going to a pool of water.

  • Hike Jasper Tip! If you are on an adventure or fitness hike and you will be out for more than one day, you must prepare accordingly. Always Stay together. When you start as a group, hike as a group and end as a group. Pace your hike to the slowest person. Stop lots to appreciate Jasper's surroundings!

  • Hike Jasper Tip! If you enjoy hikes with a group, select hiking trails based on those with the least expertise and experience. The key to hiking outdoor safety, and ensuring you have a safe and enjoyable hiking experience is PREPARATION.

  • Hike Jasper Tip! Wearing hats for Jasper's cold weather hikes are a necessity, since your body loses over half its heat through your head. Safe longer hikes include packing some basic gear you can turn into a quick shelter, for example a garbage bag. To turn the bag into a shelter, just cut a slit in the middle of the closed end and then pull it over your head. This instant shelter packs easily, costs pennies, and can save your life when a Jasper hike throws you for a loop.
